You know how some people get really intense about the Super Bowl or the World Series? I get really intense about the Oscars. (“How Far I’ll Go” was superior to any song that came out of La La Land. Lin Manuel Miranda was robbed. Fight me.) My mother has always been a big fan of film and has been keen on making sure my brother and I are up on our film education. I think she may be somewhat bewildered that my primary love is superhero movies but she humors me and I love her for it.

In my opinion, cinema is one of the most important tools we have to spark cultural conversation. Just look around at the buzz surrounding Black Panther. Not only did it smash previously-accepted myths about the marketability of movies starring (almost exclusively featuring) actors of color, particularly dark-skinned actresses. It also raised important points about colonialism and what it means to have and not have resources at your disposal.

Movies can create turning points in history. They raise consciousness and can effectively portray multiple view-points on complex issues. Even “superhero” movies, rarely Oscars material, can dig deep into our culture and challenge preconceptions, and demand us to think.

You can never un-see a movie.

Needless to say, the Oscars were a very important night in our house and once I moved out on my own, it remained an important night.

For the past few years, there has been a new award “Best Guesser” – a small plastic Oscar statue being passed back and forth among my friends for whoever most accurately guessed the most award winners of the night.

The reason I love playing for “Best Guesser” is that it gets you engaged and invested even in the categories you may not normally pay attention to. I’m still not 100% certain on the difference between Sound Editing and Sound Mixing but I’m going to give it my best guess.

This year is going to be my last play for Best Guesser with my typical crew – I’m even delaying my move out to Jersey City so that I can stick around Brooklyn for the Awards Show.

Unfortunately, the Oscars are also a massive Couch-Suck. Who else is guilty of parking your butt as the Red Carpet winds down, only getting up to grab another drink or run to the rest room.
